CAI worked with the architectural firms of SOM and Adamson and the Greater Toronto Airport Authority on the placement of architecturally integrated artwork throughout the new international terminal. We conducted an international competition working with the client and the architects to select artists for major commissions within the new terminal. The integrated art enhanced the aesthetics of the building and served as markers for passengers to locate their destinations.
CAI managed the competition, selection process, the contracting of the artists, fabrication, artist milestones, and worked with the contractors for the installation of the major works of art which included paintings, freestanding and suspended sculpture, and a water feature. Commissioned artists included:
- Jonathan Borofsky, American
- Robert Coyle, Canadian
- Katarina Grosse, German
- Sol LeWitt, American
- Ingo Maurer, German
- Jaume Plensa, Spanish
- Susan Schelle & Mark Gomes, Canadian
- Richard Serra, American
The three-year project included community outreach programming: a small aviation-themed museum and a program of rotating art exhibitions.
