Kansas City International Airport

Community Arts was contracted by the architecture firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and the Kansas City Aviation Department to work with a group of five advisory artists to recommend artworks for the new single terminal and parking garage at Kansas City International Airport. Under the Kansas City One Percent for Art Program, $5.6 million has been allocated to commission works for the project.

CAI met with regional arts professionals, arts organizations, and galleries, seeking their input and advice. Due to the pandemic, we connected to the community through an online outreach campaign and public survey that received hundreds of responses. The final report synthesized the artists’ input and priorities, concepts expressed by the public, CAI recommendations, a feasibility analysis, and best practices from CAI’s experience with airport and other public art projects.
